How do I escape a reality I cannot cope with?

I now focus all my energy on work to be able to have the money I need to do the things I like, but I want to forget about everything else: politics, religion taking over, shit, etc.

What books should I escape to?

Escapist literature is crap.

Read 'Journey to the End of the Night' by Céline.
It's entertaining.

What I know I should do is this: Stop worrying about things that I cannot change, accept reality as it is, and try to get the best out of the circumstances. I know that the grand purpose of people I hate is winning, and so I should knead my ego until I start accepting the fact that on the grand scheme of things I am a loser and will continue being a loser for a very long time after I am dead.

I just... do not want to.

surrender
that's all that there is
you suffer or cannot cope because you imagine paradises in your head
accept and see how it isnt that bad
then youll be empowered to do something about it

To be honest with you, as I grew up I envisioned a future where my ideals prevailed. I am now finding it hard to cope with the realization that my ideals are not prevailing, fundamentalism and shit are (I live in an Arab country that spiraled into full hurr durr Sharia Islam).

Doing what you don't want to do is the meaning of life and the root of all reflection and worthwhile self-insight. If I only do what I want I never have to think about why I'm doing anything.

Elaborate.

But the thought that my ideals have lost is too much for me to handle.

Maybe find some solace in these facts:

1. People have done great things in all ages and eras and circumstances. Now is certainly an easier time to be working on whatever you love doing than, say, Auschwitz 1943 or Cambridge 1670.

2. Reflect on Gell-Mann amnesia. The next time you read a newspaper, find an article about the subject you consider yourself an expert in. Notice just how wrong it is? Then why do you immediately flip the page to politics or international news and place full faith and trust in the same journalists?

Escape in the knowledge that you can't know your unknown unknowns, and the only test is to do the best you can with what you know.

it´s simple: just ignore it. Stop reading whatever newssites and -papers you are reading (also blogs etc), stop watching TV, get off facebook if you can.

Most importantly: keep yourself busy, always have something you want to read ready, so that you don´t fall back on the distractions in moments of sudden boredom.

A good place to start is questioning your own ideas about these aspects you want to forget, maybe there are just plain wrong.
Read some info which contradicts your believes instead of reading the stuff which just affirms your existing ones. And yes, I know that this is hard because it is not easy to admit that you were wrong all along about some topic.
