Are there more french novels with the same themes as Madam Bovary?

I remember reading a book in school when I was a kid about a bored woman who marries then cheats on her man and at some point I think the lover or the husband dies, in the forest (I think) while they're traveling in carriage. I know it's really vague but that's all I can remember. I think it was naturalism or realism so it could be Zola or Flaubert but I looked them up and can't find the same plot.

In french class we had to read Balzac and every time our teacher said his name the entire room erupted into sniggers and giggles.
