Why does anyone have a problem with that? Seriously, publish your own fucking book and when you've done that you're still an asshole for criticizing anything beyond the actual work. and barely even then.

And I still think that could make you a bad writer, especially if your choice of character was Jesus. Writing fanfiction is much worse however - basing your own writing on ancient mythology isn't as bad as basing it on some completely made up universe that someone else has put time and effort into doing.

I've noticed fanfiction tends to polarize opinion. It's either supportive or a strongly expressed rant about stealing another's work.

From a writing perspective I view fanfic in this light:

1) It's training wheels for you to get started. Things like characterization have been done for you. If you take it seriously enough to try to do it right then it's not so easy and make for a good learning experience.

2) It's interesting to the writer such that it keeps you going at it.

So I'm for it, both writing it and reading it with intention to pull it apart and learn from mistakes.

Let's not forget the real awful stuff, plus the occasional well done humorous piece, that leaves you doubled up in laughing outrage. Some is worth reading just for that.

One thing I'd like to point out here .. is there not a rule that covers this topic? Just saying, keep away from posting any fics and stick with the general and this thread might fly. It might be useful in the "how to I get started writing" sense.
