Can we have a Murakami thread?
I've read Almost Transparent Blue and Audition.
Should I read Piercing or In The Miso Soup next?

One time I was talking to this girl and we started talking about Murakami. Because we only talked in very general terms (e.g. "I like the way he does X or how he writes about Y), it took me about ten minutes to realize she was talking about Haruki while I was thinking Ryu. So that's that.

Anyway, I would say read Piercing, if only so you can save Miso for last.

No, he's and awful writer and you're a horrible person for reading him.

I had high hopes before starting Almost Transparent Blue a few years ago, but I gave up after few pages.

CLB is his worst novel, but the hardback design looks pretty sexy.

I think it's his second best book :) The one with freaky forgeiner is pretty intense and it's another good one by him.

Almost Transparent Blue was ok, nothing special.

1969 is my favorite by him. I know many will disagree since it's not your usual Murakami novel. No gruesome murders or anything like that.

Rest of his novels have been plain bad. I found piercing to be extremly boring.

Totally forgot he also wrote Audition. That was great book as well. I think the movie is still better since it's so graphic. Audition,69,Into the miso soup and coin locker baby are his best work. Parasite and piercing worst. Rest is okish, I don't see them as essential read. Almost Transparent blue has gained odd cult following that I don't really understand.

Because some of us... err, 'relate' to the characters a little more than the average person.

I wouldn't call myself average but I guess I just have hard time relating to any kind of drug stories since they aren't any thing like my own experience with drugs. I only have had awesome time with drugs so I really can't releate to the average drug/addiction stories.

Yeah, I like that one.

I really hate the shitty anime covers that some of them have.
