On Monday I'm giving my first ever lecture. I'm going to tell a bunch of freshmen that gender is mostly a construct and that identity is actually just performance just to spite you, /lit/.

That's nice.

That will not spite me. I already know gender is a construct since I'm a membre of the GCC (Gender Construction Comittee). Now you can easily guess which minority I'm from.

I'm jewish

Can you construct a new gender for me?

I'm thinking of something along the lines of my genitals being a sound frequency rather than a physical body-part. I attain sexual stimulation by humming at the specified frequency while retaining eye contact with my sexual partner.

>gender is mostly a construct and that identity is actually just performance

When they look back on this era, it will be seen as something along the lines of "a complacent and bored time, where problems had to be invented".

Gender seems like a legitimate and clear problem for society to overcome. Whether identity is essence or performance is a bit more abstract and wishy-washy.

>Gender seems like a legitimate and clear problem for society to overcome.

More so than poverty, hunger, drug abuse, wars, famines, autocracy, ethnic cleansings, exploitation of children, sex trafficking, etc. etc.

whats there to overcome?

how will womens studies defend me from muggers, put food on my plate, and provide stimulating media and activities?

Complaining that your persecuted because halfway through your life you decided, for whatever reason, to identify your gender as something indefinable, abstract, and nonsensical like "genderqueer" or "third gender" is an invented problem.

Unfortunately we only construct genders for the sake of oppressing the masses (particularly the white male masses). Ask /pol, they know all about it. Well, a great deal of it at least.

But your idea is interesting. I will suggest it to the next Committee General Assembly. We're currently searching a strategy for oppressing the masses of the green superior martian worm. This might help.

and this is related to literature... how?

I figured that was where you were going, but I don't see the logical connection. Seems totally silly to rank social problems, anyways. Presumably we have an ability to combat more than one at a time, and as a literary teacher "gender construction" is more in my purview than ending ethnic cleansing. An understanding of gender construction is useful to combating sexism and homophobia. It also helps a person understand and come to peace with himself.

>>3590316

your idea of combating sexism and homophobia is attacking meaning untill we cant talk about it anymore.

>> No.3590326

Do whatever you please guys. We will eventually come down with a new construct to construct you into submission. Yeah, we're that sneaky.

Literature is a good example. It's a social construct we made to prevet /lit from enjoying books.

This seems like a legitimate tactic. If we reject an essentialist view of gender and sexuality, then sexists and homophobes have no ground.

except when you do that, youre throwing out the baby with the bath water.

inotherwords, if you deny judgment, youre denying all forms of authority, credential, science, and any sort of normative stance to begin with.
