I'm...curious about what people think regarding this. To be more specific, I'm talking about the multi-generational stories. They usually (but not always) start off with one person, then that person's spouse is introduced, then the action shifts to POV children characters, etc. This isn't always the case, of course. Sometimes it's the reverse, telling the story in flashback from the POV of the grandchild or great-grandchild.

The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, Freedom, and The House of the Spirits would be more choices. All great / excellent books. They have flaws, but are still very enjoyable.

Thoughts on Buddenbrooks, by Thomas Mann? It won the Nobel Prize, so how bad can it be...?

It's been in decline for about a month. American power hour is still very busy, but it's dead for the rest of the day now.

When people started to be even more un-interesting than usual. This board is just boring regurgitated topics we have discussed a thousand times before, with lame baits and trolls that make most users cringe.

I've noticed that as well. The board is pretty shit. It needs a more focused subject, literature for example, or a project, like the book club fiasco.

Does Thomas Mann have a reputation for being bad? Or is winning a Nobel prize the thing that's giving you doubts ?
My favourite author btw.
I'm not really into family sagas, because it often frames the chars from a hereditary perspective. Thinking about this, I'm sure contemporaries like Zola wrote about family in this way as well.

People just can't be fucked and this has turned into the board revolving around everyone being jaded and not giving a fuck and not wanting the board to be interesting.

>The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao

This was on of the absolute works books I've ever read. All copies should be burned and Junot Diaz should be executed. That is all.

> It won the Nobel Prize

I like you Sunhawk. But i thinnk it was Mann that won it.

Buddenbrooks is ok, but far from his best. Actually it's his worst, imo. Not because it's poorly written or anything of the sort, it's just not that interesting. I'd go for Dr. Faustus or the magic mountain. And of course the obligatory entry, death in venice.

As for family sagas, I've heard that Gormenghast is great, though I haven't read it. Same goes for Harmonia cælestis by Peter Esterhazy.
