Hey /lit/, first year English student here, on my way to become an English/History teacher. I won't divulge where I am located, but I will tell you that teachers have a far better income here than in the US.

Anyways, I wanted your opinion on something. Do you watch high-quality television shows? One where the writing is top-notch and contains many themes that are prevalent in good storytelling. I'm talking shows such as The Wire and The Sopranos. HBO and AMC are generally two networks that deliver top quality programming, that favour story over anything else.

I ask because in this particular unit of English that I'm studying this semester, we have to watch the first season of Dexter. I noticed on the text lists for second-year English units that the first seasons for Breaking Bad and True Blood are included. Whilst I enjoy Breaking Bad and agree that it's rife with symbolism and discussable themes, these shows are not the shows I would have picked to discuss.

So, /lit/, do you watch/analyse high-quality programming? And do you think they have a place in an English syllabus?
