I think it's a fantastic comedy. It's one of his that you can't really appreciate until you see it acted out, some of em you can grasp without seeing but aMND's a blast live.

Irrelevant here.

There's an assortment of plays collected under the name of 'Shakespeare' and I'm asking you to give an opinion on them. You know what I'm referring to. It's just like if I asked for your 'favourite Romantic poem'.

I haven't really read (or seen) enough of them to have a qualified opinion, but of the ones I do know:
>favourite
Othello. Macbeth is good but I don't think I've ever enjoyed a play as much as Othello.
>overrated
I thought Anthony and Cleopatra was rubbish. And Romeo and Juliet I suppose, but only because it's so famous it kind of hogs the limelight.
>underrated
Othello doesn't seem to get as much love as some of the others.

I plan to read Hamlet and King Lear at some point.

Why do you do it /lit/, is it because it's popular and you just want to be contentious? Maybe because you were forced to study it at school?

I think it's just because it's become almost the 'archetypical' love story. It's like the literature equivalent of being overplayed. I mean, Stairway to Heaven is a fucking great song, but if I have to hear it every again I think I'd puke.

Explain to me what you like about "The Tempest", please.

I've read and seen almost all of Shakespeare's work, and "The Tempest" is, for me, easily one of his worst, most shoddy plays.

It happens over the course of a day. The island is a great setting. It's got magic. Prospero is a great character. the opening sequence pulled me right in...

>> No.3541977

Can't speak for everyone else, but I'm not intending to hate on it. It's just a clear candidate for 'most overrated' because it is his most widely known and broadly popular work, but not his best. It's still miles better than anything by any of Shakespeare's contemporaries.

Favorite:
Hamlet - What can I say, Hamlet is the most universal character I know of in Western literature

Overrated:
A Midsummer's Night Dream - He's written better comedies, the popularity of this one baffles me

Underrated:
Titus Andronicus - Sure it's lowbrow and ridiculously violent, but it's fuckin awesome.
Richard II also seems to be criminally neglected, it's a superb play.
