Good people of /lit/,

I'm looking for good reading material (essays, articles, books, anything really) on how the protestant work ethic has influenced the US. If possible, from a critical point of view at the likes of Max Weber. I've read his work already (German here, I've been treated to the 'original' writing, if you will) but look for more ammunition to fire at that 'hard work is the way to go' mantra that seems to be perpetuated wherever Americans are present.

So hard work isn't the way to go?
It seemed to work out pretty well. You know, the whole "super power" thing and the whole "bitchslapped Germany back into its place" thing.

Albion's Seed. Its purview is a lot more broad than what you're talking about, but certain parts of it go into depth about the cultural history of the Puritans, what influenced their migration to the US, and how that's echoed throughout our cultural history. You might have to cherry-pick through the book to get to those parts though.

I disagree strongly. You're still getting up after being woken up by a machine to look forward to a day where you generate revenue for somebody else, all the while avidly sucking up to your surperiours (the word in itself is horrid, but thats another story) and feigning thankfulness for the opportunity to sell your working power. Or you are self empoyed and have to do all of the above to yourself. The problem only begins with work and runs much deeper.

also the film Champion with Kirk Douglas show the myth that hard work = success in capitalism is bullshit, and that was 1949.

By that argument Superman is a production of reality. Why don't you go throw yourself of a building and see if you can fly.
