I just finished reading Ham on Rye by Charles Bukowski and I really liked it. I liked the gritty realism and dark humor. Obviously I going to read more of his books, but do you guys have any recommendations for other authors that I might like?

Charles Bukowski is realism for juveniles.

He wrote in the 'realism' category independent of who read him. As it happens, his fan base is a mixed selection of ages - as evidenced by the Bukowski forums - and actually seem to have the most prominent readership in their 40's.

I guess that working class lifestyle, redundancy, multiple employment, alcoholism, unsatisfactory life, mid-life reflection is something that juveniles cant really relate too.

Unless you were raised by people who lived that kind of life. I can't relate to the mid-life reflection aspect but I was raised in horse racing tracks, surrounded by older adults who smoked too much and never amounted to anything. I had my first drink when I was about five; saw fighting, drug ODs, and a lot of other nice things too.

When I encountered Bukowski it was great because I knew these people. Then I felt sad and moved on to other things.

Yeah, people who can actually write.
