Once this irrevocable act is complete they no longer have any power over how the work is used since it is then owned by the public as a whole.

tl;dr: when you post something on 4chan it becomes public domain. This is why you see Hot Topic selling 4chan memes on t-shirts with impunity. Pic somewhat related.
