Is this a good introduction to Western philosophy? I've read mixed reviews. Some say it gives a great overview, while others have said it's quite deficient in some areas, especially ancient and Medieval philosophy.

What are your opinions?

No. The best introduction to Western philosophy is a survey of the pre-Socratics followed by reading Plato's greatest works

Just fucking read it

It's supremely entertaining if not comprehensive.

It's a good introduction, but along with it you should read Sophie's world and you definitely ought not stop there.

Thanks, I'll give it a try.

He's a pretty terrible historian. All of his sections on ancient and medieval philosophy, and the one on philosophy in the Islamic world, are so awful that you're better off not reading them lest you end up with some horribly inaccurate impression of centuries and centuries of thought that Russell clearly didn't know much about.
