What are some good prose pieces? I need a 4-5 minute piece. I'd like it to be sort of a "fuck yeah, humanity rules" piece. But anything would do.

Picture related. This but longer would be nice, but anything you reccomend.

It's good to feel good about humanity, but it would only take a little effort for everyone to be doing a lot better.

Um... Yes? What does that have to do with the question lol.

That's a pretty daft pic.

I recommend some Churchill. He has a way of making your blood boil.

I read some, and like it a lot.

Thanks! Also I would like something with a bit more description, his speeches tend to be message based, which isn't bad, but it mostly lacks the feel I'm going for

Also pretty! Not long enough though :/

I also like this one:

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too:
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream---and not make dreams your master;
If you can think---and not make thoughts your aim,
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same:.
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build'em up with worn-out tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings,
And never breathe a word about your loss:
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings---nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much:
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And---which is more---you'll be a Man, my son!

Prolly not what you're going for, but motivational nevertheless.

Almost anything from Dune is up your alley, OP. In particular, the death of Liet Kynes is a well written version of the dreck in your post.

Well no it's not in the public domain, but you can just Google dune pdf and you should find it.

If anything stated in the OP makes you feel positively about humanity then you're either a naive reader, or a profoundly sick individual.

It's okay. OP is in high school. This is a homework thread. I've tried to set him on the path by recommending Dune. It's the most that can be done.

If you want to see some of these ideas dressed up better, then Google the PDF for Ishmael by Daniel Quinn. I think you'll find his discussion of the peoples he calls Takers and Leavers far more enlightening than the onscreen drama between the space-faring humans and the Na'vi.

For any of you who have already Quinn:
You are now aware that Humanity Fuck Yeah stories are really Takers Fuck Yeah stories.

OP needs to read some Joseph Conrad ASAP. We shouldn't worship ourselves, but instead be aware that we are always prone to irrationality and brutality. Self worship(and self hate) are detrimental to human well being.

“Little did they know that the place they were about to burgle -- the shop, and the flat above it -- had already been burgled the week before: yes, and the week before that. And the week before that. It was all burgled out. Indeed, burgling, when viewed in Darwinian terms, was clearly approaching a crisis. Burglars were finding that almost everywhere had been burgled. Burglars were forever bumping into one another, stepping on the toes of other burglars. There were burglar jams on rooftops and stairways, on groaning fire-escapes. Burglars were being burgled by fellow burglars, and were doing the same thing back. Burgled goods jigged from flat to flat. Returning from burgling, burglars would discover that they themselves had just been burgled, sometimes by the very burglar that they themselves had just burgled! How would this crisis in burgling be resolved? It would be resolved when enough burglars found burgling a waste of time, and stopped doing it. Then, for a while, burgling would become worth doing again. But burglars had plenty of time to waste -- it was all they had plenty of, and there was nothing else to do with it -- so they just went on burgling.”

“Neologisms represent a need to have the right labels for everything. A need to say “this is just so”, and be sure of it. Some observers hear the foreign imports and sigh, wishing that the English language played host to such refined, poetic lexical artifacts. Personally, I am glad to find these lacunae. To really work for meaning is not a chore. To find the closest compound of words and phrases to approximate feeling is rewarding in itself; to make use of neologisms and ambassadors of other languages and still fall short means only that you appreciate that language is always a compromise where we must meet each other halfway and say not “I know” but “I understand”. Lacunae represent the sheer impossibility of categorising the entirety of the world; how appropriate it is that so often these are found when it comes to describing the describer. The gaps are always where we find ourselves.”
