This was a good book, but didn't come close to deserving the praise it gets.

That's just a quip, tell me why I'm wrong. Or are you just doing the mature, adult thing and parroting the critic?

Sure, please let me waste more time than I already am just to explain why Gatsby is a deserving piece of art to some passive-agressive cunt on 4chan when he could just fucking google it

I would say that the fact that everyone can read it and say that it's a good book demonstrates why it's great. Compare to Joyce, whom a few art school faggots masturbate daily over muttering "2deep4u, not4me", but the rest of the world can't stomach.

lol at all the serious litfags defendind this book

it's an ok book, nothing more. It tries too hard and fails on most counts. It is supposed to be a critique of the posh lifestyle but by focusing only on it seems more to encourage than deride it.

Worth a read but agree with OP, not worthy of the lauding praise.

>> No.3491498

I agree with OP to some extent. I think it is a very good book that gets better each time I read it, but I don't think it's the "greatest work of american literature" that some people think it is

>> No.3491524

How about we all just unite in opposition to the guy who thinks Joyce is nauseating?

>> No.3491542 [DELETED]

>>3491524
how about no

>> No.3491579

>>3491524
I can't because I disagree with him. Joyce is good writing guy. Lots of people get snobby about Bach too, but that doesn't make his work inherently nauseating.

Lots of people are snobby about the fact that they read at all, for that matter.

>focusing only on/encouraging [the posh lifestyle]
Did you even read the book?
What grey wasteland lies between the two clusters of civilization?
Where did Gatsby come from again?
Who out of the wealthier characters in the book appeared fulfilled or even happy by the conclusion?

Just because Fitzgerald didn't underline his message, surround it in neon lights and draw massive arrows pointing towards it, doesn't mean there isn't a social commentary.

>> No.3491709

Gatsby is a perfect novel. At least in terms of language. Every word feels necessary. Something you don't get with most books.

Best American novel? Of course not. Large and ambitious will always beat out short and sweet. It just takes a better class of writer to develop an idea to the point where it requires a tome's worth of pages to communicate the message, whilst keeping the reader engaged the whole way through.

>> No.3491714

>>3491709
I agree with the first line of your post.

But I can't tell if you're being sarcastic in the second line? Either way I'm not sure how I feel about that statement.

>> No.3491721

>>3491702
Funnily enough he does deliver part of his message through pretty transparent symbolism. Remembers the giant eye-glasses? And the green light at the end of the dock? The novel is still great, but I don't think it's a triumph of subtlety or anything.
