It's said that some form of insanity runs in her family. Or maybe she's crazy from being locked in an attic all the time. There's no evidence that Rochester has syphillis (he doesn't exhibit any symptoms; if he gave it to Bertha, he would have had it first and one would think would have progressed further than she had, ie, been much more insane).

But as >>3463533 mentioned, it's hardly a happy ending.
