Why?

Because women naturally likes being submissive, but feminism has denied their right to do so. So reading Fifty Shades of Gray is a somewhat subtle and easy way to reconnect to and enjoy freely submission

At least France has actual literature (I use the word literature tentatively). Over hear we are dominated by guides on how to stop being a lazy fat bastard.

Why do the French still buy Marc Lévy's shitty books?

The Prince is a fuck-you to a guy Machiavelli hated. It's a book that details how to become the worst kind of ruler, as described by books such as The Art of War: The one who rules through fear. That's my argument for it being a work of sarcasm, that Machiavelli shows too much wit and education to believe that he's detailing a good or lasting way of leadership.

But to mention, all of his other work directly contradicts The Prince. He was just trolling the de Medicis.

Doesn't surprise me. I've read something along those lines as well, but since I haven't read anything of his other than The Prince, that's the only source I'm confident with bringing up. Even then, it seems obvious. Which doesn't mean I absolutely think I'm right, but it's the only way I can interpret it.
