What does /lit/ think are the major differences beatween modernist literature and pre-modernist literature?
I'm talking about a thenkincal standpoint more than an aesthetical one.

I'd say the most important difference is the new use of narratives.

Look at stuff like

Prose:
>Three Lives : Melanctha
>Ulysses
>The Great Gatsby

Poetry:
>The Waste Land
>In a Station of the Metro
>The Red Wheelbarrow

There's loads more, but I think these are good for a start

A mixture of Eliot, Auden, Merleau-Ponty, and Joyce helped me to gain the understanding of modernism I have now. I don't understand why you must disregard the aesthetic perspective from the very beginning.

There is nothing "technical" in literature that does not reinforce or create the aesthetic.

That said, just read something "pre-modern", then read fucking "The Waste Land".

Let me add, modernism is essentially a shift in the subject and in the gaze. Painting gives the best aesthetic impression of this shift. In literature, you really need to dive into a lot of work to begin to grasp at what is exactly meant by this. The one singular focal point becomes the many, perceived and layered focal points. The subject is given narrative primacy..Remember the existentialists?

Guess I fucked up by writing something that isn't about Snooki.

This board fucking blows.

I can only imagine the time period because post-modernism has refused to be defined. Written from the 1890's to 1940's -> modernism, but not always. 1950's to present day -> post modernism, but not always

Two years browsing /ic/, after that I want to discuss art as pure technique aesthetic is irrelevant.
