Adam Phillips. Readable. Easy. Don't jump into primary texts without an intro.

This.

With psychology, you really ought to have a firm grounding in - well - basic psychology before you go off trying to judge the merits of the major works of people like Freud.

I figured as much, honestly.
are there specific works of his you'd recommend to start off with?

Lacan is no good beggining, though you may already begin reading about him from secondary sources like Bruce Fink. Or even Zizek, have a laugh.

A good introduction would be to start with Freud's work. Interpretation of Dreams, Totem and Taboo, etc.

Jung is a good intro as well and I think Man and his Symbols is perhaps the most accessible psychanalytic book, so that could help to grow your interest, a good start. Even if, of course, you have to keep in mind that it is Jung's approach. It's also good that Jung sheds a light in Freud for his criticism, and tells the story of the two (and others).

But I'd say if you really want to get into psychoanalysis as it is today, Lacan is a good point, though you need a lot of background for it.

Read Nietzsche too.

But as >>3431425 and >>3431420 pointed out, the more background you have, the better. Or else you'll have to be patient. Most people get scarred at some point, but you need to press on and understand the context.

Man and his Symbols has been on my reading list for a while now, I suppose now's a good time to go ahead and read it. thanks a bunch for the other suggestions as well.

Psychoanalysis has been completely destroyed by science. Anyone who believes in this bullshit is a crank.
