Ian M. Banks
Culture

I am about to read Excession and the only other book from the series I have read is The Player of Games, which I really liked.

What should I expect? How do the two books compare?

Feel free to engage in your dubious pleasures, but don't try to pass them as proper literature.

My definition of literature includes sci-fi, ergo you are proven wrong.

Because I like the premise of Excession more and afaik if you are familiar with the Culture the reading doesn't really matter.

Was Phlebas the one with the dude on an island eating guts and shit? I think I might have started it in the past.

No idea, I just know it's the first in the series.

Yeah it is.

I've only read Phlebas and Player of games but of the two Phlebas was for me far better.

In fact Player of Games is the reason I haven't read any of the other books.

WTF? I've read the Culture series up to LTW and I thought Player by far the best in the series.

Anyway, Excession? Eh, I don't like it that much. The excession itself is a macguffin and there's a whole other plotline that's basically pointless. The whole novel seemed to me an extremely long winded way of showing that the Culture Minds weren't basically all goody-goody.

Read Use of Weapons next if you can. That and Player are the only two ones, thus far, that I think are really worthwhile in the Culture series.
