I didn't think OMW was so bad...pretty average space epic. Scalzi's humor grates on some, I know.

I thought it was crap and the reveal that they turn dead people into super soldiers that are better than the living ones was fucking retarded, why even let people join the army at all, just buy corpses from people, shit.

Is that the whole reason you thought it was bad?

Besides that, there were tons of little parts that bothered me.

- swearing constantly and endlessly
- strawman characters, the fat dude who was racist and the liberal hippie douche who got himself killed, just terrible fucking writing with the both of them.
- constantly attempting to point out cliches and be beyond them but embracing them fully

I'm reading Sherlock Holmes.
So far it doesn't look so interesting, but I've read only 2 chapters.

What would possess anyone to pick up this book and immediately think, "This is worth my time"?

I think calling the straw men "characters" is giving Scalzi too much credit. How much did you love the fact that besides the two you mentioned, every character was written in exactly the same way?

There was humor?

Yeah pretty much. THe only characters that stood out to me were the strawmen. THe ones you were supposed to hate. Fat racist dude had ten times the personality of the protagonist. Liberal "hurr lets make peace with people we just nuked" dude was morei nteresting than his friends...etc..
