Hey /lit/, can you guys recommend me books with pictures on them? I know it sounds silly but it's because i'm an art student and I'm having trouble with graphical thinking. Whatever would do, books on architecture or design, ancient codices, books on biology or whatever that has pictures on them, preferably illustrations.
Also i'd like some works that deal with the subject of symbols, signs, icons, all that shit.

I would be extremely thankful.

youd be much better off going to the library and looking for themselves because you seem really excited about this and this board will do nothing but make you depressed, unmotivated, and will ridicule you.

This might be a stupid advice, but have you thought about looking for graphic novels, comics or manga?

Oh my gosh. You need to go and get/borrow/steal Building Stories by Chris Ware right now.

Go on. I'll wait.

I agree that some artists like Natsume Ono's have style, but I'm not sure what OP wants.

Yes. I love (some) comics and graphic novels, and Ware is amongst my favorites but unfortunately Building Stories isn't yet available where I live (and i don't think that will happen any time soon)

I was thinking more about something a with less narrative bias, something more abstract...

Why? /lit/ has been helpful to me before and also i'm not having unrealistic expectations, I just thought i'd give it a shot.

You are an art student right? Can't you request your university to buy a copy? Even if they have to import it, usually they don't mind the expense if a student really wants it.

Have you ever considered Arzach by Moebius?

it's a public university and we don't have that much of a budget. Last year we had to buy the lightbulbs for one classroom, and there was this class where a student had to take her own electric heater so the live model wouldn't freeze to death.
So I don't think that would work

Hey, I just looked that up and it seems very interesting. Thanks!

I just remembered. If you can find it, this picture book by Faulkner has some banging illustrations. I just thought I would share. http://www.brainpickings.org/index.php/2012/12/28/william-faulkner-the-wishing-tree/

I would also check out these:

Gotta love brainpickings.

Oooh, that's a pity. And none of the libraries/other universities have it?

That's great man, thank you

Nah, my best prospect is waiting until my canadian cousin comes to visit and ask her to get me a copy. But alas, it could take years til she comes here.

Or maybe I could go to a big library i know and see if i can get them to order one, but i'm a little skeptic. I don't know. It seems too good to... not... buying it (?)

you should do a performance where you douse yourself in gasoline and strike a match. it'd be easy for you, since there's no graphical thinking involved
