What are some good crimes books that aren't the massively popular? (The Godfather, Wiseguy, etc)

>> No.3363884

I would say Crime and Punishment, but I do believe it is massively popular. However, that's my rec.

and a good rec at that.

Dreaming of Babylon is alright, I just read it. It's more like a detective spoof though.

I haven't heard of it, so that's a good enough recommendation.

Just finished Drive by James Sallis, and I was surprised by how good it was. I started it as a guilty pleasure really because I love the film, but I found it read like literature.

I'm actually reading that right now, and for the same reasons too. So far I've gotten up to the sixth chapter, and from what I've read it's starting out a little slow.

The L.A. quartet by James Ellroy is a great series of noir crime books.

Although a well know and big selling series, one even made into the movie The Black Dahlia, they have no conceivable connection with Dave Foster Wallace so no one can post yet another picture of his fucking face, therefore they are unknown in the world of /lit

Fantastic books all the same, especially that second one; very bleak but believable characters.

If you liked Wiseguy you should read Casino.
I ordered a book called Five Families because it looked similar... but jesus it's the size of a dictionary. I'm in the middle of another 1200 page book.
