Seriously? What is the deal with this guy? His prose is terrible; it has no cohesiveness, that is , it feels like an unstoppable chain of afforisms with no relation among them. WHat is you opinion, /lit/?

>Reading Emerson for prose

Wut?

>> No.3363880

Pretty much agree. Have only read The Poet, but it seemed mostly like the inane ramblings of an opium druggie. Influential or not, that's not a particularly well-structured essay.

Why the Emerson hate? His essays are great

>History
>Self-Reliance
>Nature
>The Oversoul

sheesh you guys just sit around whining, it is pathetic

Could you elaborate on what makes it so great? It seems to my mind that his "Essays" have no essence, no clear message to give, just an empty desire for grandiose and profound matters that results in nothing

"Self-Reliance" is pretty solid, I'm not sure what you're talking about -mostly due to your spelling of "aphorisms"- but he is more of a substance-over-style writer, as >>3363822 has implied.

I would appreciate some more insights and opinions. Sorry for the typo, by the way.
