So what are you, just under 100 years old?

Forgive me but this sounds like some typical /lit/ patrician pandering. I'm sure kids enjoyed these books back when they were relevant but there is no way that you understood the significance and the mythology of the gold rush era or romanticism when you were a kid.

My nine year old daughter is reading White Fang and enjoying the hell out of it.

If there's any "patrician pandering" around here it's the notion that kids need to grok the mythology of the gold rush to enjoy an adventure story featuring a bad ass wolf.

need /lit/ help with fantasy nostalgia

it was a book about a one eyed wizard who participated in a fighting tournament. The story was set in a large city with 4 faculties/guilds, each with different requirements and members. Throughout the book the wizard got himself to all 4 the guilds and everything was well in the end.
The centre of the city had a large pyramid as basis, something like in the pic.

that's all I remember, it was a single book for about 350p thick.

I had a crazy experience as a kid reading the sequel to that book, Small Steps. For about 30 minutes I thought I was Armpit, and I cried because Armpit (who I thought I was) didn't get a letter back from some girl he was crushing on. I was like, devastated. Anybody else remember the Jedi Apprentice series? Those books were actually really awesome. Every book was basically just an exploration of a different utopian or dystopian sci-fi setting, through the lens of Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan. Some of them were actually pretty thoughtful for YA books. I remember I could knock one out in like two hours and sometimes have a lot to think about afterwards.

Might download them or something and blast back through them. It'd be kind of cool.
