Where do I start with Tao Lin? Seriously.

I don't care if you think he's utter shit, I'll decide for myself.

Somewhere else.

>> No.3332446

If you are so into making your opinions why are you asking for ours? Just pick one and read it.

>> No.3332450

>>3332446

I'd like to decide if he's shit or not on my own. But I don't mind asking which book best captures his essence as a writer.

>> No.3332452

Richard Yates is his best work.

>> No.3332454

What makes you want to read Tao Lin? Really, though. I've never heard much praise so I never bothered.

>> No.3332456

eeee eee eeee or his poetry

Richard Yates is ok, I just didn't like it.

If you'd like to decide whether he's shit or not without our help, then you can certainly decide which book to read without us telling you where to begin.

Use that big, beautiful brain, girlfriend.

I could, but I don't want to.

Mainly because /lit/ dismisses him so quickly and I have a strong feeling almost everyone that dismisses him has never read him, and is just dismissing it him cause it's the 'thing to do'.

Thanks

Well, his first novel Eeeee Eee Eeee is nice and so is his short story collection Bed. They were released at the same time and represent his more wordy style with metaphors and imagery and some sort of surrealism for a bit. Then you have his later minimal, matter of fact, concise prose as represented in Shoplifting for American Apparel and Richard Yates.

I'd start with Eeeee Eee Eeee or Shoplifting from American Apparel if I were you. The latter is a novella. I'd start there and if you find it too bare move on to Eeeee Eee Eeee.

That's why I read Shoplifting and before I knew it I read all his prose.

Start with Richard Yates:

That night Haley Joel Osment was alone in the apartment talking to Julia on Gmail chat. Julia was 28 and married and lived in Georgia. She was friends with an editor of a magazine that had published Haley Joel Osment’s poetry. Haley Joel Osment’s cell phone vibrated. It was Dakota Fanning. Haley Joel Osment moved his cell phone to his ear. Dakota Fanning said her mother found out about him by reading a blog post’s comments section where he had said things about his first visit to New Jersey including when they screamed bad words across the Delaware River. “I think she knows you’ve stayed here overnight and that you’re 22,” said Dakota Fanning. “She already googled you a lot I think.”

“What’s going to happen?” said Haley Joel Osment.

“I don’t know. I can’t leave here. She won’t let me leave.”

“Is she calling the police?” said Haley Joel Osment.

“No, I don’t think she will. I have to go. She’s here.”

“I don’t know what to say,” said Haley Joel Osment on Gmail chat to Julia. He said Dakota Fanning’s mother found out about him. He said Dakota Fanning was banned from the internet. “Oh no,” said Julia.
