Who's a better writer, /lit/? Which world is better? Which world has the better character?

There's a thread on /tv/ about this so I'd like to get /lit/'s opinions.

You're a moron. Only one of his characters is 'good to flawless' -- Gandalf, and he's an angel and a Christ figure.

You're confusing the mythic epic-hero register with moral judgement -- probably because you're an illiterate American raised on shit cartoons and comic books.

Had to crack out my paperback Return of the King and wipe the jizz and coke-dust off for this one.

"And far away, as Frodo put on the Ring and claimed it for his own, even in Sammath Naur the very heart of his realm, the power in Barad-dur was shaken, and the Tower trembled from its foundations to its proud and bitter crown. The Dark Lord was suddenly aware of him, and his Eye piercing all shadows looked across the plain to the door that he had made; and the magnitude of his own folly was revealed to him in a blinding flash, and all the devices of his enemies were at last laid bare. Then his wrath blazed in consuming flame, but his fear rose like a vast black smoke to choke him. For he knew his deadly peril and the thread upon which his doom now hung.

From all his policies and webs of fear and treachery, from all his stratagems and wars his mind shook free; and throughout his realm a tremor ran, his slaves quailed, and his armies halted, and his captains suddenly steerless, bereft of will, wavered and despaired. For they were forgotten. The whole mind and purpose of the Power that wielded them was now bent with overwhelming force upon the Mountain. At his summons, wheeling with a rending cry, in a last desperate race there flew, faster that the winds, the Nazgul, the Ringwraiths, and with a storm of wings they hurtled southwards to Mount Doom."

Tolkien could write like a bouse. Impress me Martin readers.

Fair criticism, I've thought the same myself. I suppose when writing this stuff you have a choice. One way is to have your separate characters do the cool action stuff while you hash out the details, and when they inevitably meet back up you just throw in something like "Then they told each other the stories of their journey, blah yada blah." The other way is to have your characters do the action stuff, skimp on some details but get the major points, but then when the peeps meet up after, allow the *characters* to tell the story (getting a new perspective and build on their development and personality). Not sure if there is a BEST way to do it but obviously Tolkien preferred the latter

The problem is that your weight problem is not just your problem. I personally don't care about the obesity of any person I don't have a relationship, as in if a person is fat, okay, they're fat. My problem is that people live in such a way that they become obese. Being obese in unhealthy, and the road to there is unhealthy, and I don't want the people who are yet to become obese or even to be born, to be influenced by this environment. Thus I want a society that doesn't just say "okay, these people can become obese in no time at all, let's not try to do anything about it". Obesity is not always a choice. Some people become obese in no time at all, while I can barely gain weight if I try. And I'm born into an economical level where I can afford to look critically at food and decide to pick the healthier, more expensive option. And I have received an education that has provided sufficient information to make me know about the pros and cons. A lot of people don't get such a good education, or have the time to pick the less convenient solution, or the money to buy anything but the cheapest food, etc. etc.. And this is a problem, as far as I'm concerned. But I won't dislike you personally for being obese, unless you're annoying like a lot of fat people are because of hormonal imbalance or whatever.

Because Martin is fucking fat.

We're trying to teach the fatties how to improve their lives, but they're stubborn and won't hear any of it.

They built a fortress of lies to keep themselves fat as long as they can blame it on someone else (society, men, the media, Jews, etc) and they REALLY don't want anybody making them doubt their dogma. It's what keeps them sane, but also fat as fuck.

>What's the percentage of people who are genetically taylored for fatness?

It's hard to say. Some islanders in Oceania are genetically predisposed to fat retention (95% of the population of Nauru are clinically obese) Then we have countries with a similar genetic makeup to them; Samoa, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Palau etc.., which all have incredible levels of obesity. Sure, the 'western' obesity epidemic is usually due to a horrendous intake of fat and monosaccharides, but there is a legitimate genetic factor too.

>> No.3331276

>>3331259

Legitimate genetic causes of fatness are extremely low. Entire nations are more sensitive to fat intake (Asia, billions of people) yet they don't have the insane amount of fatfucks that America and Europe have.

Who puts food in your mouth? Fatties? Who does? Society? Who pushes you to eat at McDonald's?

No, Asian countries usually have a lower sensitivity, untill you start getting towards Laos and Cambodia.

>yet they don't have the insane amount of fatfucks that America and Europe have.
Do you mean entire nations like the ones you ignored in my example? "In Nauru, which tops the league table, 97 per cent of men and 93 per cent of women are overweight or obese." Check out the stats for a load of other pacific nations too.

Ok I actually didn't know that. I remember having a friend in school who was probably at the 200 pound mark and for him it was a genetic reason.

But I think we can both agree that the really obese people are just eating way to much and don't do anything against it.
