Does the hobbit take place in england?
It's called "middle earth" but im sure that just what they call it in the book.
If this is not the case, could someone inform me where it actually takes place?

Middle earth is a reference to Imperial China. That's why the Hobbits are so little. The Mordorfags are the opium pushing Brits.

It takes place in a fictional mishmash of European culture and mythology which Tolkien uses to creatw his mythopoiea. Middle Earth is the world of men in Norse Mythology, the other worlds being Asgard and Utgard.

Tolkien wrote Lord of the Rings as the British folklore/mythology that he thought Britain never had. (King Arthur sucks, deal with it)

So Middle Earth is the creation myth of the Brits. Middle Earth slowly changes into our current Earth after the elves and the various powers leave at the end of the fourth age.

>> No.3324793

It's based mostly on Britain. I know that's hard to believe (mountains etc.) but it is. Tolkein based some of it on Staffordshire and other parts on the countryside around Birmingham. It wouldn't be too much of a stretch to guess that the forests were Welsh.

I don't like that they filmed the Hobbit in New Zealand. Filiming the LOTR there is fine: it suits the drama and romanticism of an end-of-the-world quest. But the Hobbit? Nah. That needed to be in a comfortable setting.

The hobbit is very welsh in setting, mines, valleys, areas with an oral tradition, the prominence of mutton...
