herro friends

So, big art nerd here (mostly film) with very little 'reading' experience (all I read are scientific journals)

I'm trying to get more into literature but it's being very hard for mostly because I really dislike fiction and narratives

I have an especially huge disdain for it in film, where it single handedly caused arthouse to fall to its knees and be replaced by Hollywood
I pretty much restrict myself to non narrative and experimental cinema

I tried to go over the board's reccomendations but it seems like all of it is narrative fiction, many of which I'm already familiar with from script adaptations and film and greatly dislike

Where should I look instead?

If you like Brakhage (and anyone who doesn't can be easily filed into the "shithead" bin), then I might recommend Alain Robbe-Grillet, George Perec, and maybe Richard Brautigan.

Others will recommend Pynchon, Joyce, probably Foster Wallace, but they're all narrative writers (especially Joyce, but the narrative is shit and that gives it an aura of abstraction).

Poetry comes closer to the visual arts, and I particularly recommend Kenneth Goldsmith, who is a kind of sculptor, kind of poet. Then I'd recommend John Berryman, who I recommend to anyone asks even tangentially.

Thank you so much!
I posted a Brakhage pic specifically to better illustrate my point and hoping someone would recognize him, glad it happened.

http://briandettmer.com/

I don't really know what this is - it's literature and it's sculpture and it's completely fascinating. I come from a literary background, so I view his work as poetry, but what the fuck do I know?

Burroughs is mentioned above, but Dettmer takes the "cut-up" technique to a completely other level. It's not a book though. Or maybe it is.

It would be traditional to say 2deep4u at this moment, but I'm not going to.

Narrative art imposes constrictions and unrealities. Many people don't enjoy narrative as it closes their interpretation of an artwork, despite the alleged "death of the author", if the dead author constructs a work which guides you to an endpoint of riverrun, past Eve and Adam's, and you're back where you started, then there's a natural artistic/critical response which is "fuck you, you cunt, how fucking dare you tell me where to go".

Someone like Kenneth Goldsmith attempts to avoid this railroading towards meaning, and allows the reader to inhabit the work, or something. I dunno.

All the time on /lit/ people are all like

>reading for plot

While reading for plot/narrative. It's funny really.

non-narrative art is kind of like that, but without going up your own arsehole and lying.

I saw this thing recently which was constructed entirely of film footage shot through the tiny metal window of an armoured personnel carrier in Iraq. In an hour it told me more than any news report about what people see in that situation, but I couldn't tell you how.

I also can't remember the artist, which is pretty terrible of me, but I'm a terrible person. It's not the worst thing I've done.

There's no narrative to speak of, much like Auster's work in general It's a celebration of synchronicity.

It's not precisely the non-narrative that OP speaks of, but Auster is the closest that the mainstream comes to aceiving it. Moon Palace in particular is a novel which you read and think "hang on a moment, what the fuck was all that? is that a story or what?"

I was once at the MOMA and saw this pretty girl staring at some abstract shit, I walked back to the room 10 minutes later and she was still staring at it and I felt so touched and so inadequate, she was experiencing something transcendent on a whole other plane and all I saw was ugly shit.

Then you go describe your war movie and it sounds like the most fucking boring thing ever, like so fucking shitty but it meant something to you. There are two possibilities, you're full of shit and see nothing in these postmodern fag-fests but just want to be fancy OR there is real meaning in them but they are beyond me. That's not entirely true. Many "primitive" cultures have non-narrative artforms which dominate their artistic experience.

Other "primitive" cultures (15 year old-girls, for example) derive enormous artistic pleasure from non-narrative artdorms like pop videos or the Beatles in "Can't Buy Me Love".

Brion Gysin and William Burroughs experiemented with non-narrative art throughout their association. Gertrude Stein, George Braque, Jackson Pollock can all be seen as non-narrative.

The 20th century was essentially founded on the resistance to the narrative (modernism) and then the resistance to the meta-narrative ("post" modernism).

I was going to correct artdorms to artforms , but it seemed appropriate to leave it.

In comparing avant-garde films with the greatest film director of the 20th century: John Cassavetes.

"Most avant-garde films don’t arouse the degree of resistance from a viewer or a critic that Cassavetes’ work does because they implicitly marginalize their own insights. They stylistically contain the dangers dramatized; they do not release them into life.

Their assaults are formal, their fragmentations are stylistic, their disorientations are intellectual. Cassavetes moves avant-garde imaginative disruptions off of the screen and into the world "

You can think that narrative is essential, and that reading for plot is stupid. You wouldn't be saying narrative is all there is.

I know, however, that narrative is not essential, but so far nobody has provided any decent examples of things that lack a narrative. Just because Pollock's work lacks iconography doesn't mean one couldn't divine some narrative in it, and as for examples like Beatles movies and Auster's work lacking narrative, it's plain wrong, all that's happening is that narratives are being presented in unusual ways there.

The most obviously non-narrative works are from the guys who were in the "Nouveau Roman" movement, like Robbe-Grillet.

I hate to sound like some brash pleb but it's boring as fuck. Abstraction is boring. It's deep within the human psyche to want to grasp a narrative, an unfolding of events that coincides with our linear perception of time and our Western perspective of ever-progressing history. Now, author manipulation, that's schlock technique, I'll admit it. But that shouldn't completely degrade the whole concept of narrative fiction- a form that has existed since the dawn of man and will likely exist as long as we do. "Arthouse film", "Raw emotion", whatever the fuck you want call it, comes close to being "art" (I presumptively define art as something created that provokes reflection) but ultimately fail to make a real connection with our humanness.

They were the first things that came into my head that fucking morons bang on about all the time because they're fucking stupid.

Here are some more things I never watched: Pop Idol, Dancing with the Stars, Doing the Dishes with Padme Lakshmi, Home Improvement, Dara O' Brian's Science Club, Degrassi High, Gordon Ramsay's Whatever the fuck.

I know the names of many of these things because fucking morons use them in the place of conversation or culture.

Her work doesn't have any kind of rigor or precision, it lacks philosophic clarity - which would be fine if she was doing anything but using narrative as a thin cloak for an overtly preachy diatribe. Her characters are zero-dimensional, her style is pretty universally vacant, and she can't write an entertaining story to save her life. Most sensible right-wing thinkers find her philosophy laughable. She was never taken seriously by anything but the popular imagination.

Anthem is almost readable, but none of her other work is even worth glancing through.

You cunts want to talk about Ayn Rand, eh? Well I'll tell you about her: she fucked Alan Greenspan (slightly against his will), and he basically created modern America. Your shit-ridden, spoiled and pointless generation is based on the Randian ideal.

You didn't live up to it, and a large proportion of you ended up as uniformed tools in foreign parts, who didn't understand what was happening, but then the rest of you ended up as tools in your parent's spare-room who also didn't understand what was happening.

That's why Rand is a banned subject - because you are Rand. All of you. And that's why you are such abject fucking shit.

Rand places "truth" as the ultimate goal and the definition of beauty, while I feel Nietzsche recognized that falsehood can be beautiful as well.
