So I see poem threads on here all the time and some of these poems truly kicks ass, others have literally put me in tears. Then you guys start talking about slanting verse and all this pseudo-technical poetry jargon gets thrown around. All of the stuff I find online is really basic, explaining how rhyme schemes are labeled with ABCDetc. Are there any good online guides to poetry? If not ,what book should I buy to really grasp the nuances of poetry writing and lastly what book of poetry would you most recommend /lit/?

This is OP. I realize this post doesn't make sense at some point. Forgive me.

The only way I see to get better is to read... just talked about this in a thread. Read tons of poetry and always read more than you write.

>Howl by Allen Ginsberg
>The Dream Songs by John Berryman
>Meditations in an Emergency by Frank O'Hara
> The Wasteland, Prufrock, and other poems by T.S. Eliot

Anything really. It's like going to a country where you don't know the language. Sooner or later you'll learn... just by being surrounded by it.

Writing Poems by Michelle Boisseau (and others) has helped me understand quite a bit of what you're after. As a textbook I had Poetry: an Introduction by Michael Meyer, which is expensive as hell, but was absolutely fantastic. I also suggest The Poet's Companion by Kim Addonizio and Ted Kooser's The Poetry Home Repair Manual. As for a specific book of poems, I'd have to suggest Anne Carson's Autobiography of Red or something by Boisseau (mentioned above).
