Apparently there's a thorough review of Eragon that pulls it apart and explains exactly why it's bad

Does someone have a link to it?

I do, because I'm interested in what makes bad storytelling

How about instead of studying bad authors and how not to write, you study good authors and how to write.

tl;dr: it's shitty.

I think it would be very useful to know the causes of bad writing, since obviously no one sets out to write badly. I'm just curious either way, I want to know why it's terrible

Why do you need it? If it's for a debate, just point out the obvious plot-theft from Lord of the Rings and Star Wars.

there are a lot of them
this is the first one i found using google
you really shouldn't care though
all you need to know is that it's incredibly derivative and that paolini is a fucking aspie

He basically copies all the names of places, themes, storyline etc from either Terry Pratchett or Tolkien.

He reuses words a lot, i.e. "permeate."

He said he'd write a trilogy and then ended up writing a quadrilogy, which was a totally obvious market ploy because it introduced an entirely new dragon.

It's stylistically barren and is really only notable for its plot (which it, again, stole).

There's no need to study it. It flopped because it was based on faulty or stolen premises.

Can't speak about Eragon, but if you're interested in people pulling apart shit storytelling, Googe Red Letter Media and watch Mr. Plinkett's reviews of Star Wars, Star Trek, etc. Worst case, it's really funny shit.

One is as useful as the other.
