Thoughts on Henry Miller? A friend recommended the author.

I think he's great. He's a life loving, likeable, joyful kind of roguish satyr who doesn't care much for systematic ways of living and thinking and doesn't have much patience for things dull and contrived. At the same time he can go on strange rambling quasi-metaphysical tangents just because he wants to. I think Miller did what the Beats wanted to do but did it better and earlier.

He's good but rambles off into obscure territory, like quasi -philosophy, mythology and eastern mysticism.

Best thing I liked about him was his celebratory optimism despite being intelligent. A real life-liver; had a lot of charisma and friends, and bitches.

One of my favorite authors by far.

I never read him, but this raised my interest.

>> No.3234357

fun at first, then just boring. he doesn't really have anything to say. tropic of cancer is overrated crap with a few good moments. capricorn was okay. rosy crucifixion... meh

>> No.3234953

Tropic of Capricorn has this scene where he sees the scenery of a stage before the curtain is up or something. I think it's proof he opened his third eye.

It reminds me of something I read about occultism in general. You stick a picture of an ugly, scary goat on the cover and the wrong people don't read it. Except Miller did it with sex.

I feel his books somehow in the middle o western and eastern culture, connected to Japan in a Zen conception, going the way of living the life as it goes...I like the honesty, so I like him. Very human, from cultural point of view, not natural, but very human.

Very interesting! Well he's written many books. Where should I start? Tropic of Cancer or Capricorn? Black Spring? Big Sur?

>> No.3235481

I recommend reading them in this order.
Tropic of Cancer
Black Spring
Tropic of Capricorn

some people rave about The Colossus of Maroussi, I was kind of meh.

>> No.3235692

I really tried to read Tropic of Cancer and Capricorn. It was like Hemingway without clear prose or anything good happening, and he said the word <s>pussy</s> edited for sensitive souls.

Thank you! Just ordered a few of through some Amazon dealers.

I'm kind of sick of all these "I love life!"-authors. I know that sounds edgy, but believe me when I say I mean no serration.
