The ratings don't really mean anything, It's just how I feel about it at the moment of finishing the book, I'm not changing it later (even though I probably should). Everything between 3 and 5 stars I at least liked.

For both books I went in with the same mindset (reading for fun), one delivered. I could still appreciate it if it would have been something special, and was different from the other thousands of spaceship exploration stories. It read like a really long dragged out short story. Oh and the "I have three wives" bullshit thrown in, and the badly aged cold war fear "ohh no Mercury is throwing a nuke". I didn't like it.

Childhood's End was really good though.

I don't know. The plot wasn't exactly interesting; the feelings of the main character didn't stir any inside of me, there was little force to the spirit of the characters.
Plus, the dangers of westernization were too obviously depicted, with little art, just too outdrawn.

Anyway, it was nothing new on the femme fatale theme (not exactly a femme fatale, but whatever). I'm just tired of the I desire this person/object for pretty much no reason.

Maybe it was it's tone, which I didn't find very authentic.
I liked other Tanizaki books better in any case.
