Have any of you ever tried to get an internship at a publisher or literary magazine? I'm currently perusing The Paris Review's internship info and realizing: a) a majority of their interns are likely Ivy League, b) I don't have many literary essays I can present, and c) I have no hope of ever landing this.

write some. i don't think it should be that hard to get the internship if you're an interesting person.

Do you want to be a successful writer, OP?

How many of your favorite writers were interns at the Paris Review?

I was thinking that they were expecting real academic-grade (i.e. pieces that received a grade evaluation in uni) work, but I guess you're right.

You can write academic-grade papers outside of academia; generally they don't expect a marked version of it, from what I understand.
Also, an internship at the Paris Review does sound fun regardless of how many favourite writers of OP's were interns there.

I'm also looking at internships at places like Penguin, Simon & Schuster, etc. I'm a journalism major who kind of lost an interest in journalism.

I'm not expecting some magical time, nor to be "discovered," I just like books.

Wow... looking at that, I tried to laugh, but I just couldn't do it. That's never happened before - I've always laughed.
