I'm still working on getting my deadlift max up to 500. I'm at 360 currently. I'll be sure to post pics of my suicide once I achieve my goal, OP.

You have to go out with a bang though.
Your death has to be in the name of some grand ideal like youth, beauty, patriotism etc...

or Cunt, monsieur? is there any higher ideal than Cunt?

>> No.3193893

Ideals are bullshit.
Nobody will remember any of us in a few thousand years.
Suicide is for the nihilist, the idealist is better off volunteering at local charities.

I could say something like...

"If I became a powerlifter, if I have so keenly sought this fame for which I'm still waiting, it's all been to seduce women basically. "

I just finished The Sound of Waves a few days ago. I never say this, especially for translated works: it was beautiful.

shoot, I was deciding between that and Spring Snow as my first Mishima read at the bookstore the other day. I chose Spring Snow.

>> No.3194040

>>3193978
What Spring Snow about? Anyway, you can get through The Sound of Waves quickly; it's only about 181 pages.

>> No.3194058

>>3194040

It's about beauty, tragic love and Japan's slow decay.

>> No.3194079

>>3194058
That's about the same thing as The Sound of Waves. The Sound of Waves was a coming-of-age-age love story on the surface, but there was a lot more going on under the surface.

>> No.3194081

>>3194058
you forgot the reincarnation theme, though -in meaning- more of a plot device since Mishima didn't advocate for it.

>> No.3194087

But what's the actual plot about?

>> No.3194101

>>3194087

It's been a while since I read it but... well, it's about a nonchalant, feminine young man named Kiyoaki who exudes charm, purity and refinement. He is destined to die tragically and beautifully in the name of forbidden love; his only friend, Honda the intellectual, can do nothing for him.
Through the tetralogy, Kiyoaki is reborn as three other characters who share similar traits, but are noticeably different; Honda will get to know each of them through his long life. In parallel to Kiyoaki reincarnations is the westernization of Japan and the loosening of its strict moral code (which is a disgrace for Mishima). The last book is especially disheartening.

A handsome young aristocrat of a family with military origins starts a love affair with a betrothed girl and continues it to the bitter end. I think his contrariness is meant to be a subjective, selfish counterpart to samurai heroism; a decadent hero, implicitly put on a level with the romantic hero of the next novel in the tetralogy.
