What other works should I read before I can properly appreciate Tao Lins' work?

inb4 go to bed Tao

>> No.3188014

All of Dr. Seuss works.

>> No.3188021

Nothing. His works exclusively address the vacuity of contemporary culture, so a lack of cultural context is probably ideal.

>> No.3188024

Maybe browse the internet a lot and have the tv on in the background and go to a mall.

>> No.3188023

Some psychoanalysis to understand how infantile and unhealthy his behaviour is.

His influences are Bret Easton Ellis (I know, jesus), Richard Yates, Lydia Davis and DFW. Check them out I guess.
Also, Check out The Human War by Noah Cicero to get an understanding of early alt-lit. Cicero is an influence on Tao's work, even if Tao is better known.

If you are doing BEE, just read Rules of Attraction, frick everything else.

If you're going to read Tao

SFAA or EEEE EEE EEEEE (then the other)... and maybe Bed.
Skip his poetry and stay the fuck away from RY the book, not the author.

>avey tare and a cat, because why the fuck not/

>> No.3189839

Read Coupland's Generation X and BEE's The Rules of Attraction. Both of them are pretty much about the meaninglessness of youth and that should lead into Lin.

Watch some mumblecore movies too starting with Linklater's Slacker and moving your way up.

>> No.3189849

>>3189839

Actually the characters in Gen X aren't that young but I think it still works. If anything they probably reflect Lin's apparently persona right now. Late 20's meandering.

>> No.3189855

Lit, any chance I can get a straight honest answer on whether you actually like Tao Lin? Opinions seems pretty divided, and given the nature of his work, it seems the absolute best way to benefit from it is not to read it (I'm being serious here). I'm sure his prose may be different, but I can't help but feel his poetry is deliberately nebulous for no reason I can discern. It's certainly interesting to read, and incredibly different from the "standard", but I'm not sure I'd ever want to see it become a popular style; of course, it probably never will.

i like tao lin as a person in that i think he is neat and his more recent short stories & books are good, not really that interested in his poetry either though

So who're /lit/s fave alt-lit authors?

You lists better include Noah Cicero, Jordan Castro and Scott McClanahan.

Don't care for his poetry but I like his prose. I like the sort of bleak moroseness of it. I'd dare to call Tao a Schopenhauerian in a lot of ways.

>>3189987
Noah Cicero is anything but an insufferable hipster. He's a working class white male who happens to write. Same with SCott McClanahan.

...okay, Jordan Castro is, but he's came into his own now, you know, since he stopped ripping of Tao Lin.

I bet you are Tao and are pissed because Jordan diddled your ex.

I diddled Tao's ex. She was high on adderall.
Steve Roggenbuck was being a dick so I left him to annoy Sam Pink and started chatting to her.
Pretty sure Stephen.Dierks was in the room. I would recognise his faggot breathing anywhere.

Pic related. It was the bed we diddled on covered in pleb lit.
