What do you think about Frankenstein /lit/?

A remarkable debut novel with some historical intrigue. Not a bad book at all.

pisses me off that a 19 year old girl wrote a good book

Do you buy into the message that too much ambition is certainly harmful? Or that the romantic view of the world can be detrimental? Basically, do you think her argument is persuasive?

Fantastic. Some fantastic Gothic and Sublime moments, especially some of Victor's descriptions of the Alps.

Plus, there are so many interesting topics raised: man playing the role of god, the Miltonic relationship between man and god, the role of science, and so on.

Plus, it's a fun read. Tough to put down.

I don't agree that she's saying the first thing. Certainly the creature's romantic ideas about things set him up for a lot of heart break, but he did also grow as a person, while the more cynical Frankenstein didn't gain anything.

What remarks do you think Shelley is making about ambition? I thought that the idea that an excess of ambition was bad was a pretty clear idea.

Not >>3180344 but I don't think Shelley is saying anything negative about ambition. It wasn't Victor's ambition that got him in trouble; the trouble was because he freaked out and tried to abandon it when things got real. Victor became terrified of the power he had, and he tried to escape it, but then it literally pursued him.

So it was actually Victor's unwillingness to follow his ambitions to their maximum.

But throughout Victor's creating process, he completely abandons his family and friends, so I thought that was a way to show that Victor's ambition had gone too far

Frankenstein just doesn't live up to his responsibility as creator. It's not that he was too ambitious, he was just an asshole.

I can see where you're going with this, and with the whole stealing shit from was it abattoirs and morgues or something? In a sense he's just naval gazing, trying to find out what it means to be human by building a human, but he totally misses it. His creature understands that need for being around other people, but Frankenstein is being reductionist about the whole thing.

I think both sides of the argument are present in the novel - that ambition leads to great reward but comes at a great cost.
