how do I start discworld? which one do I read first?

>> No.3151229

>>3151228
the answer is always in chronological order of release.

>> No.3151242

>>3151228

Just read em in order of release, or if you're interested in a certain series (Rincewind, City Watch) then start with the first of the series and read in order of release.

No problem. Which story arc are you looking forward to the most?

no fucking clue. I was thinking of just starting from the beginning

>> No.3151272

The first few books are quite different to the later books. If the first one doesn't do it for you maybe switch to a later one. (I'd suggest Guards Guards! since its the 8th book but the 1st one for the City Watch Arc.)

>> No.3151338

I was told to start with "Guards! Guards!"

So far so good.

I like a Personified death is that series good?

One of the best. Usually kind of sad and thoughtful as well as funny.

Death is one of Pratchett's best characters. I suspect that when he goes full-on poor pterry the first thing he'll hear is

CHEERS MATE, I OWE YOU ONE.

well shit, That really interested me into reading Mort first

He appears in most of the other stories as well, he's always looking to kill Rincewind.

Is it weird that the Luggage is my favorite character...?

wait. I dunno who Ricewind is. Is it okay for me to start Mort first?

Question:

How deep is this series in terms of attention to detail? Is it the kind of series you should read all at once because it can get crazy and you need to follow the path?

I ask because I plan on making my way through 4 fantasy/scifi "epics" in the near future (WoT, ASOIAF, Dune, Dark Tower) and I don't really want to jump into ANOTHR 10+ book series. But if its pretty light reading, i wouldn't mind throwing in the occasional discworld inbetween my more "serious" fantasy bouts, if you know what i mean?

opinions welcome

I would also like to know this

>> No.3151580

the books follow a rough "timeline" in that the earlier books usually happen earlier in the world and earlier in the storylines of the starring characters. there are "mini-series" within the series, e.g. "the witch books", "the night watch books" "rincewind's books", etc. small gods is a notable exception, and i recommend starting w/ that one b/c it takes place a (few?) hundred years before anything else and you don't need to know anything about the world to start it.

the plot of each book is generally wrapped up in the space of that book, so you don't need to remember too much aside from the characters, general setting, who dies or leaves, etc. all the books about Vimes and his Night Watch are stand-alone, self-contained stories, but you should read them in chronological order or else you'll be wondering "who's this new watchman?" or "why does that guy have a limp?" or whatever.

Don't worry it's never complicated and each book barring a few witch series books can be read entirely standalone (The only bonus you'd get would be cameo roles, lore knowledge and the like)

>> No.3154041

Depends how good your reading comprehension is op.
If you have been reading loads of classics, works renowned for being dense and hard, then you may not enjoy Discworld works because the prose are pretty poor. They almost qualify for being like Harry Potter, amazing as a kid but plain and bland and kiddy as an adult.
