Opinions on Walden?

Do you agree with Thoreau?

Disagree?

Why?

>> No.3147295

Also, how do you feel about his writing style?

I will begin this essay by calling the OP a faggot

It's a really nice idea, and maybe not 100% based in reality, but I like how optimistic he is about humanity.

I don't get when I hear people call him elitist or conceited though. He was writing about how every human is great and has the potential to achieve true happiness and harmony with nature.

Thoreau was a scared little man who pretended to live in the woods but ran to his neighbors any time he needed help.

He didn't put that in his book did he?

Agree? He basically invented civil disobedience. Gandhi learned a thing or two from him.

I think he'd make a good chambermaid.

He mentions talking with other people on occasion and how the Irish suck, and his aunt got him out of jail after he spent one night in it (although he allegedly did not ask for help)

They both blew. There have been no good American writers.

I like how Buddhist/Taoist he is. Lots of parallels. Most people give him a lot of heat, I feel like some see him as "entry level" etc. and move past his ideas due to that opinion.

Dude he constantly refers to humanity as ignorant, that they don't talk about anything worthwhile, and that all their lives aren't any better than animals. The only optimistic part about it is when he imagines a change in humans, and even then he doesn't give any practical ways to bring about that change, he just lists what he things should happen.

That said I love the book. It's clever, well written, and
The way Thoreau proposes we live our life is something I agree with.

Thoreau was a fraud.

When he wrote Walden he never lived more than a couple miles from town. His mother and sister would bring him fruit baskets regularly.

Look it up

He never claims to have lived in complete solitude. He covers his trips to Concord and visits with neighbors. Never brings up his mother bringing him fruit baskets probably because he had nothing to say about it. Regardless of his interactions, his reflections, thoughts, and arguments are all very real and well composed. They are not thwarted by his occasional social interactions.
