I asked elsewhere and they pointed me here, first time i visit this board.

Can somebody explain to me why this book is so popular, fastest selling book of all time etc. Everywhere i go i see women reading this, so i thought to myself it must be good.

I couldnt even finish the first book, bored me to death, is it supposed to be fap material or a serious story? If its fap material than its disappointing to me, i have seen better written fapfic on 4chan, aside from the fact that they mostly end with fresh prince or with the girl growing a dick. Am i missing something, does it get better in the second and third part?

Most people are idiots and publishers are good at exploiting that fact.

Well i am an idiot when it comes to books but i still dont get why this book is the fastest selling ever, what makes it so appealing to the masses?

It got a lot of press because it was used as an example of erotica bring sold on e-readers. That explains why the first one sold so much. I don't know why the sequels did

Protip: if you see a book everywhere, or if you see women reading a book, chances are it's shit.

It's sort of a new porno chic. Basically, imagine being able to watch porn everywhere and feeling really good about yourself for doing so. That's what it is to women.

It gives completely vanilla and boring housewives a very safe way to believe they are exploring themselves and their sexuality. In reality, anyone in the BDSM community laughs at its inaccuracies and Twilight-esque nature. The book is just an outgrowth of the sexually repressed nature of our modern society and how it cannot approach anything different without it being framed in the familiar.

Because shit sells.
Same thing with Downton Abbey. Both E.L. James and Julian Fellowes should be shot.
It's a mystery.

Thats what confuses me the most, you say its erotica, but i cant believe that its the best erotica out there, i have seen better stuff written on fucking 4chan, and the ppl who write it here do it as a joke.

I dont get it.

I've read fantastic porn on fanfic. I mean really great stuff. Most of the best fanfiction authors seem to be gravitating towards ao3 now, so porn.
Adult fanfiction. net is shit, though.

It's erotica for women, and actually for pretty stupid women. As you are obviously a guy, go with picrelated.

No it isn't, retard. It panders to retards and Americans. So, you, I suppose. The writing is abysmal and the acting is even worse. The only redeeming thing is the house itself and the costume designer. Why do you think it isn't on the BBC? Because they think it's shit. They already did a spoof of it explaining why they didn't pick it up. ITV is where all the schlock goes.

No, shit, it's my bad, you put "a dick", I just read it as "the dick" because of my association of phallic phrases with Descartes

I don't really watch a lot of TV. In terms of drama serials, I ADORE Sensitive Skin. In regard to dramatic movies, Secrets & Lies and The Remains of the Day are probably my favourites.

It's erotica for woman. A rich guy and a virginal/innocent girl. The guy is alpha as fuck with tons of money etc
It's the life most woman want, the crazy sex (bondage?) is just a differential

My two favourite movie adaptations of plays are Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf and the Vivien Leigh/ Marlon Brando Streetcar.

I just finished reading it (the first one) and I gotta say it's horrible in different ways. I can actually see why women like it, since the alleged "alpha" character is actually falling deeply in love, she is a bit confused but NOT into the BDSM stuff and instead tries to "save" him, to lure him to the light, you know, the women shit: cuddling, being sensitive etc.
It's NOT about a woman exploring the dark sides of her sexuality, it's a woman agreeing to some kinky stuff in order to manipulate the man. And of course he falls for it, it's all about "I like what you show me" for him and - at the end of the book - "I don't like what you show me" for her. Throughout she keeps calling his preferences like binding her hands or spanking her bottom (OMG) perverted etc.
It's a vanilla girl trying to save a poor, perverted soul from the evil ways of BDSM.
I don't know if she finally gets sucked into the sick hell of the traumatized millionaire, who does such evil things as putting a blindfold on her while fucking, in the following books, as I will not read them. I couldn't read a single page of this drivel without rolling my eyes, shaking my head or even facepalming. It's the most horrible stuff I've ever read (talking 'bout published novels here).
I can clearly see why the BDSM community hates it; I don't know about "technical" errors, but such practices are painted as sick perversions of people that have been abused and traumatized when they were little kids.

Except it isn't. I thought the attention it gets would indicate that a lot have fantasies like this, instead it's about rescuing someone who has fallen. It's not "I give in and submit myself to carnal pleasures out of the norm". It's all about how the "consensual sex in the missionary position for the sole purpose of procreation" is the way to go.
Though it can be argued that a lot of women probably didn't know that when buying, since general perception was just "it's a book about BDSM sex". So they MIGHT actually be "dirty", but should be equally disappointed in what they got. Or maybe they just scan through the pages in search of the steamy parts. Can't blame anyone who does.
