Hiya c/lit/s,

I want to start writing something. Maybe a novel, maybe short stories. Im not too fussed about the quality. I rather want it to be a little project for myself. I do, however, want to do my best.

So is there any essential literature on writing I should read? Are the any good websites, tutorials etc. out there?
Any other tipps are greatly appreciated!

there are general rules for writing, but one of these rules seems to be that the best method to improving your writing is to write. so stop worrying and just go do it. after you're done, take enjoyment in the process of self-reflection and improvement. learning what you could do to better express the ideas you have can disheartening to some people, but with the right attitude you'll see improvement faster than any book or website could offer

now only if I could listen to my own advice

But Im sure I need a theoretical foundation first...

well generally speaking...you only learn the rules of writing so you know how to break them well and not in some naive cliche way. i just recommend reading authors you enjoy and consider what they are doing to make their shit appeal to you and take it from there. that's the best way to keep it fun and interesting for me.

but yeah, no better teacher than experience. no better way to gain experience than putting pen to paper.

then type away. putting pen to paper can be a figure of speech if you want. possibly to mean "to write" regardless of how you want to go about it.

don't be an ass.

Are you fucking kidding me? Why don't you stop being a stupid little cunt and just write something. I mean fuck, why do you fucking need "theoretical foundation" first? Go read some books, and write some shit you stupid little pleb.

You will probably find that you develop your own little quirks and stuff.
In essence, it's like a game of yahtzee - you can somewhat practice your way out of habits you don't like, while keeping the ones you do. I would be hardpressed to describe it to you, but a personal example is I used to try writing in rhyming verse for a while, then I tried more freeverseish stuff and found it helped me with the more basic parts of descriptive writing and I didn't had to struggle to find words that fit the rhyme scheme. Other people would prefer rhyming poems, etc. purely for they're rhyming, etc.
My point is, when you write something that you like, keep it and try to do more of what you liked about it in later projects. If you write something that you don't like, revise it until you like it and refer to the previous sentence.
