So I'm in a remedial reading course in my community college. My problem is that my comprehension is terrible. I never read, so I believe that's the reason. I want to start reading, so I'm asking if anyone can recommend me a book that's similar to movies such as Memento or Machinist.

If you don't read often, you'll find the literary "equivalents" of Memento to be really quite challenging, I think. If I think of anything that's accessible and lines up with that, I'll post again.

you need to start with something fairly simple and straightforward, like Thomas Pynchon's "Gravity's Rainbow", then work your way up to the complex shit, like Ernest Hemingway.

You could read what the machinist reads in the film; The Idiot -Dostoyevsky
