Basically George/Lennie dom/sub relationship. Steinbeck puts a lot of sexual themes in his novels, like at the end of Grapes of Wrath with the homeless guy licking that girl's breast or whatever and of course "The Pearl" is basically about ejaculate. All the stuff about 'over the hill' or whatever is visions of a more tolerant society (read: over the rainbow). The black dude, I forget his name, is symbolic of the clash between gay rights and racial equality in the same way that abolitionists and feminists eventually split apart, but that's neither here nor there.
