so, what does /lit/ think about Dune,
also are the sequels worth reading?

>> No.3057712

Read Book of the New Sun instead

>> No.3057721

Dune is good. I don't like the sequels. Book of the Nw Sun is also worth reading.

>> No.3057725

Dune is bad. All the names are made up gibberish and the main antagonist is cartoonishly evil. I can't even suspend my disbelief when the big bad guy is a man so fat he needs technological assitance to move and who also rapes little boys.

>> No.3057730

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed reading it

>> No.3057733

Dune is good, if you have a feel for mysticism it's even better.

Haven't read any of the sequels.

Dr Yueh, what a jerk!

I, will ty
>>3057725
ye that annoyed me as well tho the story itself is quite good imo

>> No.3057873

I liked it a lot!

>> No.3057936

"Dune" itself is the best of the series; read D. Messiah, Children of D., and God-Emperor of D. to more-or-less complete a story arc; the remaining two novels by Frank Herbert himself aren't very interesting and the two novels written to complete the series by his son Brian and a collaborator are so badly written I could barely get through them. I didn't try any of the dozen or so prequels for that reason.

>> No.3057968

>>3057936
ty, maybe ill try all Herberts novels, if the others keep me interested

>> No.3057986

I put it away when nothing interesting has happened after 200 pages.
Seems not to be everyones cup of tea.

BOTH! They are both too good to be ignored in favor of one another.

Read Dune 1-6.
Read Book of the New sun 1-4 and Urth of the New Sun.

well the world and setting is interesting enough imo

The setting is pretty interesting. Feudalism...IN SPACE

>> No.3058113

>>3058024
that's the point. the political parts are way too long with not enough plot in between and this is very boring after sometime, especially if everything is made up and has no actual significance.

>so, what does /lit/ think about Dune,

Oh boy.

Gary Stu & his mother Mary go on a holy crusade to get even with an obese sweaty homosexual - in case you didn't think him being evil wasn't obvious enough - who killed their leader-by-divine-right father and they meet mindless muslim-drones who worship them as gods and will do everything Gary & Mary tell them to do. And everything they do succeeds. They ride worms, and Gary does everything better than anybody else. Then the bad guys die. Also at first there wasn't any water, but the muslims had been saving it, and the planet will be turned into paradise.

Sorry, but the comic is obligatory.

Anyways, Dune has a special place in my heart for being, quite literally, the trashiest bit of sci-fi that I've read and also liked. Starship Troopers is almost there for being borderline fascist propaganda, but it doesn't strike me to be quite as silly as Dune can be.

That all said, Dune is a decent read, and the content within appears to be a novelized form of prog-rock album covers, except that it isn't followed by some insane keyboard noodling.

nice summary.. /sarcasm

its not that sci-fi to be honest, its political

So you're telling me that the image of horrific mutants dunked in goo or fremen surfing on giant worms wouldn't make a totally rad album cover?

Yes it is. That part's called Dune Messiah.

I'm spiteful because someone stole my copy out of my bag when I was sleeping on the train.
