So, I never ready anything from Orwell. But recently, I got myself a Kindle and read Animal Farm, and then 1984.
Both were good, Though, I prefer Animal Farm, 1984 was a bit heavy on the whole sex thing among other things but god damn, do they leave you feeling like shit. None of them had a decent closure just
>yeah, it's in human nature to be a dick. Deal with it

We don't even get a small hint at how they don't take shit like this for too long. I guess I'm really new to Orwell.
Anyway, I'm about to start reading Homage to catalonia, and I have no Idea what I'm getting into, I guess more of the same.
But before that, gonna watch the 1984 version of 1984

1984 & Animal Farm is shit.
Or rather, I wanted so much and was expecting so much. But they are nowhere near as good as BNW or Kallocain.

There is debate over whether the "Principles of Newspeak" appendix offers a hopeful ending to 1984 because it refers to the Party, Newspeak, Ingsoc, etc. in the past tense. It's a bit of a stretch but it's an interesting idea.

Well, I'm not from and English country, so I read a translated version, I didn't notice it being in the past tense, since as far as I know, all of our dictionaries are in past tense.
And why would they use Newspeak if the Party fell? It's a pretty big symbol

Ah well that's understandable. I think the idea is that it's supposed to be some guy wrote this essay on the Principles of Newspeak, in standard English, at some point in the future after the Party has fallen, just as like a historical thin. Like I said it's a bit of a stretch and I prefer the completely hopeless ending anyway.

Homage to Catalonia is not more of the same. It's his account of his time in the Spanish Civil War. You can see how some of the events in the war, particularly those dealing with the Kremlin, could go on to influence his later writing of 1984, but really they are wholly separate entities. And that's a good thing. 1984 and Animal Farm were his two worst works, most of the rest of his writing is far more nuanced and has actual depth. I'd also suggest you read Keep the Aspidistra Flying, and find some collection of his non-fiction essays and articles. Anything that has Politics & The English Language is good, Why I Write is good, To Shoot an Elephant is good but not quite as good as the previous two.
Just keep in mind his two most popular works (1984 and Animal Farm) are the exceptions to the rule when it comes to Orwell.

Holy fuck I never noticed this, but in the 1984 movie, The 1984 release, Winston looks like Orwell

This. Homage to Catalonia is pretty great.

Read his essays. How the poor die, Decline of the English Murder, In the mines, etc are all worth reading

My absolute favourite Orwell is Down And Out In Paris And London.

To the layperson, all British people look alike. It takes years of study to match the eye of the native to discern the range of features like droopy eyes vs. saggy eyes, bulbous nose vs. protruding proboscis, and weak chin vs. slightly less weak chin. A curious species, Englishmen, and certainly homogenous in their pasty, gormless countenances.

If you want to read his analroast about communism, and the spanish civil war, Homage to Catalonia

Im finishing homage to catalonia (translated to catalan though) and I‘m finding it geat. Maybe it‘s because I‘m a massive fag for this period, but I think that his journalism is way better than his novels.
It‘s a pity that I didn‘t read it before 1984, because it clearly shows the thought process that ended in 1984.
