Have you ever encountered what you consider a "red flag" that gave you a bad feeling about a class' direction? Perhaps it was a particular book in the required reading, or a stated objective in the course description? Maybe a professor listed a book that he or she wrote to be mandatory reading?

Literally, this guy wrote a book defining what he thinks an asshole is, and its importance in political theory. The class is based on his book.

Look I've deluded myself into believing that a manufactured "Socratic dialogue" is necessary and healthy for basic instruction so we are not going to discuss this reading until some undergrad idiot offers up his half-baked interpretation of it so I can use that as a starting point for actual lecture.

I remember being in a US politics class (Not an American btw) and we were discussing gun culture in America.

A student brought up how it's because Americans are more paranoid than other people and cited a scene from Bowling from Columbine where Michael Moore goes round Canada and finds a bunch of people who have left their front doors unlocked. And because Canada allows guns legally it must be because Americans are paranoid.

I then said that Michael Moore is a film director who fabricates things for dramatic effect as he did in Sicko when covering our own nation's healthcare (it is free as he said but he made it out as if our doctor's were Rolls Royce driving yuppies).

Furthemore, saying I have been to Canada and have a lot of family there that people don't leave their doors unlocked and that if you compare Canada's gun laws they are far more sensible than the US'.

The lecturer turns out was a Michael Moore fan.

Individuals and groups from diverse sub-cultures, ethnicities, histories, genders and generations make meaning in the context of significant spaces. These spaces can be private or public, idiosyncratic or monumental. This unit will give opportunity for students to investigate a range of specific private, public, contested and heritage-recognised sites. It will also introduce students to a range of practical and theoretical skills for reading the processes of meaning-making in such sites. Preceding from semester one of cultural studies, the approach will be inter-disciplinary and will combine individual responses to sites with guided reading from amongst history, semiotics, gender studies, architecture and technology.
