"pretension" is by definition a negative trait, it connotes projecting an image which isn't substantiated by your actual knowledge or abilities.

the word tends to be misapplied, though. dfw was not pretentious, just ambitious. when people label him pretentious, they are really just letting us all know they have a chip on their shoulder.

i also find the dfw haters around here sad and frustrating, but when the fans make claims like "anyone who speaks ill of him just doesn't understand him", it's not really surprising that those detractors become hostile. i wish both sides of the debate could just be a bit more diplomatic, for the good of the board.
