I've been reading a lot of Presocratic philosophy, mostly about Thales and Parmenides.

If you were an ancient Greek philosopher, what would your name be?

Let me break it down for you.

The name "presocratics" comes from 19th-century classical scholars, who saw a fundamental break between the interests and methods of this group of thinkers and Socrates (470-399BCE), and who regarded Socrates' interests in ethics as a radical advance in Western thought. Few would now agree with that evaluation, and it is worth pointing out that several of these 'Presocratics' were actually contemporaries of or younger than Socrates. As a descriptive label, the name "Presocratics" is misleading, but as a designator for a recognized group of thinkers it has unfortunately become commonplace.

TL;DR - You are wrong.

Why does "many of them were contemporaries with Socrates" occupy four hundred and fifty words in your post? Why did you give me Socrates' lifespan?

Of course it's arbitrary. All divisions are arbitrary. Do you think "Classics scholars in a century from the beforetime thought it up" is actually an argument against something? Generally if something is being practiced in scholarship, SOMEONE THOUGHT IT UP PRIOR TO THAT. It's still a convenient term, and it has real meaning for a variety of reasons spanning content, method, prevalence, and the dominance of certain schools. Christ, if we can divide Latin literature up into three distinct eras I'm pretty sure we can say that Socrates and Plato were a significant landmark in Western philosophy.
