About to read some hp lovecraft. Which story should I start with?

>> No.2995418

The Colour out of Space or The Rats in the Walls.

>> No.2995422

The obvious is Call of Cthulhu, but you could try the Rats in the Wall, or Colour out of Space. Just don't touch anything that's part of the Dream Cycle since those stories are loosely connected and you might not understand some things.

Which are the Dream Cycle?

>> No.2995445

The Call of Ctulhu is good. My favorite is Dagon. Lovecraft doesn't really float my boat, generally, but that's just me.

I would read "The Outsider." It made me cry the first time I read it. Lovecraft is a master of words and worlds.

Just go in order.

>> No.2995456

The second story of his you read should absolutely be "Beneath the Mountains of Madness."

It's more of a novella, really.

No, his early stuff is terrible and reads like someone trying so hard to adopt his style but failing in so many ways, as he hadn't developed as an author by that time. It should be read after you start liking Lovecraft, to see how he progressed.

I usually recommend "The Outsider" or "The Cats of Ulthar" first. They're short, so it's not a big time sink if you discover you hate his stuff, and both pretty good.

Just borrowed a large book from a friend of Lovecraft's works. I enjoyed The Beast in the Cave, and The Alchemist. (They're all I've read so far, but I really liked them.)

How about The Colour out of Space, as read by Britain's greatest living songwriter?

The Music of Erich Zann, Polaris, Beyond the Wall of Sleep, The White Ship, The Doom that Came to Sarnath, The Terrible Old Man, The Cats of Ulthar, Celephais, The Picture in the House, The Quest of Iranon, The Moon-Bog, and Cool Air are a few excellent stories.
You can't really go wrong with any H.P. story, they're all great in their own way.
You can find some on the internet, but they usually come in collections that you could find in any library.
