Honestly here is how you should start out:
Start with a few shorter texts. The great gatsby is a good introduction to literature then go on to breakfast at Tiffany's cannery row and a few shorter Ian McEwan novels like enduring love or my favorite on chesil beach. Before ou move on go online and get a good feel for the main themes in these texts so you are sure you understand them.

Now comes the hard part challenging yourself, from here get some good online guides and resources, read Joyce's a portrait of the artist as a young man and nabokovs Lolita. They will test you but they are not too long so it's not that daunting especially with some online help. Then read a couple of longer novels I suggest east of Eden, Stephen kings It and the grapes of wrath. Then go on to some recent McCarthy "no country" and the road stay away from blood meridian for now but if you feel confident go for "all the pretty horses" which in my opinion is the better novel and a little more readable.

Now that you have read and understood the following now try and get a grip on some post modernism. Most post modern novels ate huge tomes, I would suggest a smaller start. Don Delillo's white noise. They have great online resources for it aswell so you can get a firm grip of the themes presented. Then move on to his masterpiece "underworld" in my opinion the best modern novel ever written. Then after that just have fun with lit, read whatever dude. Good luck ;)
