I'm considering becoming a librarian. Does anyone have any recommendations on what my graduate degree should be and where I should get my master's degree?

I can go to any ALA accredited program in the United States or Canada, but it is cheaper for me to go to a school in Texas or Canada, as I'm a resident of Texas and have citizenship in Canada.

Graduate degree needs to be in library sciences which is basically a computing course nowadays.

For undergrad, it's very good.

Although, I'm sure you could do a masters in any subject and then supplement it with a vocational librarian course later on.

Not necessarily. Librarians will still be needed at least in the library of congress. Only thing is, you need a PhD to work there.

>> No.2990608

Librarians are masters of research. I wish they made an investigations programe where instead of searching out killers they have librarians searching out relevent texts for peoples thesis'. Then some new maverick joins the branch and gets demoted for his unorthodox methods and has to deal soley with undergrads.

*insert law & order scene change sound*

I hope you're a genius. Not like "good for your class" but really top 15% nationwide: The MLA grad program is so glutted right now people are coming out with masters and taking $14/hr parttime jobs with no bennys or security.

If you can live with poverty you might as well get a uni library job overseeing student assistants and get in now- Skip the higher education part. There's less contortionist pandering there than you'll find yourself doing in a public library (video game night! job employment rehabilitation services! computer literacy classes!).

Har.

No seriously OP don't even get into it. This is where art history undergrads go when they refuse to face up to their (or their parents) loan debt. I knew a library director who made less than a manager at McDonalds. The only people who can do this are diehards who aren't on the fence like you and are willing to adapt to the marginalization literacy is facing by streamlining libraries into edutainment Internet access depots for the growing lower class. The only people who still check books out are checking out harlequin romance and James Patterson.

librarian is a surprisingly competitive field. with the economy, internet, and general dislike of education many libraries have lost a lot of funding. many librarian jobs have been cut, leading to many applicants for the few jobs that remain. the places that are hiring are usually looking for librarians with a lot of experience.
